Passing UTM Parameters in Hidden Fields (in Marketo)

If you use UTM parameters in your URLs you can pass this information along to Marketo from Leadpages by using hidden fields.

Step 1: Create a new UTM parameter in Marketo.

Go to "Admin." Then click "Field Management" on the left. Then you'll want to click "New Custom Field."

Type should always be "string" as shown above. Name your utm parameter as needed. If you are tracking month, use utm_month. Then click Create.

Your new field is ready! New fields will always show up on the right in the "Lead Info" folder at bottom, they are in alphabetical order.

Important Note: At this point, you should create a new list in Marketo, if you don't already have one you'd like to use.

Step 2: Configure your Marketo integration on your Leadpage.

Sign into your Leadpages account, and edit your Leadpage or create a new one.

Navigate to the opt in form on your page.

In your Leadpage's Integration Settings, set up your Marketo integration and list.

Scroll down to the form fields and click Show advanced options….

Then, find and click on field role and change it to hidden, and put in a custom value for the "Pre-populate using" space. The pre-populate value can be whatever you want it to be, but we recommend using the name of the variable (in this case, "utmyear").

Once the page is published, modify the URL to include the utm parameters and values.

Parameters are added to a URL using a question mark, followed by the name and value for the parameter. Each parameter is separated by an ampersand (&) symbol.

For example:

You would then use this full URL (with appropriate changes based on context) to your email or link to publish.

So by clicking on this link with the UTM parameters, users can opt in and the parameters will pass through to your list.

Find the lead in your Marketo list and click on "Lead Info" and verify that the UTM parameters passed through.
