Advanced Tutorial: Capture Opt-in Information on a Wistia Video Thank You Page

Recently, we’ve noticed more and more people using Wistia videos on their thank you pages. In fact, we’re doing it here at Leadpages.

It’s great because contacts who consume content immediately after opting in are typically more engaged with your services long term. However, though leads will have just opted in to your list, Wistia doesn’t automatically associate their email address with your video’s analytics.

In this tutorial, we’ll cover a workaround you can use to ensure your leads’ email addresses get associated with their views in Wistia’s analytics (no Turnstile needed). Let’s get started!

In this article

Configure your Leadbox

Set up your thank you page

Optional: Create a Center Rule using Wistia data

Configure your Leadbox

First, you’ll need to add a code snippet to your Leadbox. The code should work for any standalone Leadbox, or any Leadbox that’s part of a Drag & Drop page. Follow the steps below to add the code to a Leadbox in the Drag & Drop Builder:

  1. Click any button that leads to a Leadbox, then click View/Edit. (Or, create a new Leadbox)
  2. Open the Leadbox Tracking section from the lefthand sidebar.
  3. Paste the code below into the head tag section, then click Save.
  4. Publish/update your page to save your changes.
<script>
var emailInput = document.querySelector('input[type="email"]');
emailInput.addEventListener('keyup', function (event) {
localStorage.setItem('drip_email', event.target.value);
});
</script>

NOTE: You can use similar steps to add code to any Leadbox (including Standard Leadboxes and standalone Drag & Drop Leadboxes).

Set up your thank you page

Next, open the thank you page you plan to use, or create a new one. Make sure you’ve embedded your Wistia video on the page.

TIP: For more information on embedding videos, please see Embedding Video on Your Leadpage (for Standard Builder pages) or The Video Widget(for Drag & Drop Builder pages).

Navigate to your page’s tracking code section, then paste the following code into the head tag section:

<script>
(function(){
window._wq = window._wq || [];
_wq.push({ id: '_all', onReady: function(video) {
var identify_video = localStorage.getItem('drip_email');
console.log(identify_video);
video.email(identify_video);
center('associate', identify_video)
}});
})();
</script>

Next steps

That’s it! Once you save and re-publish your Leadbox/opt-in page and thank you page, you’ll be able to check out who’s watched your video in Wistia’s analytics.

Bonus: Create a Center rule

With Wistia’s Center integration, you can build automations for your most engaged leads. Depending on your needs, you can create a simple segment with your Center rule such as “Add a tag in Drip for any user who watches more than 50% of the video.” Or, create a very specific segment—we’ll show you how to make the following rule below:

Add a tag in Drip for any contact who came from Facebook and watched the video until my pitch at 68%

Here’s how:

  1. Create a new rule from scratch in your Center account.
  2. Click + Add Source, then select “Website Activity”.
  3. Choose “Page Visit” from the event drop-down menu (and which tracking code you’d like to use). Add a “Page Referrer URL” condition that contains “facebook.com” (as seen below).
  4. Then, add Wistia as an additional source, select your video, and add a “Duration percent” condition that’s greater than 68% (as seen below).
  5. In the action portion of your rules, click Add Action and select Drip. Then, click “Add to…” › “Add tag”, and enter your tag. To finish, name and activate your rule.
