Add contacts to Drip

You can migrate contacts from your Center rules to Drip via CSV files. To learn how, watch the video or follow the step-by-step guide below.

Step-by-step guide

Follow the steps below to export contacts from a Center rule and import them to Drip. You can repeat the process for any rule whose contacts you’d like to migrate to Drip.

Step 1: Export leads from a rule

  1. Navigate to the My Rules tab in Center.
  2. Hover over the rule whose contacts you’d like to migrate. Then, select “Export to CSV” from the rule’s action menu (⋯).
  3. Enter an email address where you’d like the CSV sent, click Export, then Done.
  4. Check your email inbox. You should receive a message with the subject line: “The CSV file for <Your Rule Name> is here!” Open the email and download the linked CSV file. 

Step 2: Import leads to Drip

  1. Open the CSV for your rule in a spreadsheet editor, such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or Apple’s Numbers.
  2. Review and edit any data as needed. In most cases, you shouldn’t have to change anything. We recommend keeping all data, even if you don’t have a use case in mind for it right now. 
  3. In Drip, go to SubscribersImports/Bulk Ops and click New Bulk Operation. Select the “Upload a CSV option”, then click Next Step.
  4. Upload the CSV from Center, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the bulk operation.

As you set up your bulk operation, you can add any actions you’d like to perform on imported subscribers. For example, you can add a tag to each subscriber with the name of your original Center rule, or add subscribers to a specific workflow.

The fine print

Here are a few important notes to keep in mind—especially if you upload CSVs from multiple rules:

  • You must have an email column in your CSV. Other columns—with a few exceptions noted in the Drip article above—will be imported as custom fields. 
  • Drip will not upload duplicate email addresses. If you upload multiple CSVs that contain the same email address, Drip will add or update data as needed via custom fields. 
  • Every import is reviewed to ensure Drip maintains its high deliverability success rate. Keep in mind that each subscriber must be opted in (purchased or sourced lists aren’t allowed). 

Rebuild Center rules in Drip

Like Center, Drip provides powerful tools for creating automations. While each tool approaches automation differently, it’s possible to recreate a lot of Center’s functionality in Drip.

Drip provides two main tools for creating automations:

  • Rules are great for performing actions based on specific triggers. For instance, you can create a rule that tags any subscriber who completes a purchase in an integrated payment service.
  • Workflows make it easy to map out and automate entire campaigns and funnels. For example, a workflow could tag anyone who makes a purchase, then add them to an email sequence for new customers (and they can easily handle even more steps).

Center rules vs. Drip automation

Many features in Center rules have an approximate equivalent in Drip (though a few do not):

Website Activity tracking

Center’s Website Activity code is relatively similar to Drip’s JavaScript snippet. Learn more about the snippet—and how to install it—here: Installing Your JavaScript Snippet.

Rule segments

Drip events are similar to segment sources in Center. Services that integrate directly with Drip (such as Stripe, Calendly, or Crowdcast) send custom events when contacts complete certain actions. 

Each action is time-stamped and may provide additional details. You can use event in rules, workflows, and more. For additional information, check out Drip’s events overview here.

Rule actions

Actions are available in Drip rules, workflows, and bulk operations. A wide variety of actions are available—from adding a tag to removing subscribers from a campaign. 

If you use Zapier or HTTP posts, you can even create custom actions. 

Example rule migration

Here’s an example of how you could recreate a Center rule in Drip. 

The Center rule in this case is designed to follow up with anyone who visits our cart page but doesn’t complete their purchase within a day. 

Here’s how it’s set up:

  • The segment matches contacts who have visited our cart URL (using the website activity integration) and do not complete a Stripe purchase within the next “1” day.
  • The action portion adds any matched contacts to a “No Purchase Yet” workflow and gives them a tag. 
NOTE: Although this example uses Drip, you could migrate a similar rule that uses a different email marketing platform.

Here’s one way you could recreate this rule in Drip using a workflow. 

  • Set the workflow’s trigger to subscribers who visits the cart URL. 
  • Create a goal of successfully completing a charge in Stripe. If a contact completes this goal, they’ll exit the workflow. 
  • Add a delay of one day. Below the delay, add two actions: one to apply a tag, and the other to begin the followup workflow.

And that’s it! Workflows are powerful enough that you can likely consolidate multiple Center rules into one.
